PROFESSIONAL SKILLS I HAVE LEARNT FROM THE PRACTICUM

Participating in the practicum as an integral component of the MA program in TESOL at Ho Chi Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities has been a transformative journey, enriching me with a diverse array of professional skills that are pivotal for my future endeavors in the field of English Language Teaching (ELT). This reflective account encapsulates the insights and competencies I have acquired through the various aspects of the practicum, including microteaching, workshop organization, and cross-institutional visits.

The experience of microteaching at Nha Trang University was a pivotal moment in my professional growth. It allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting, interact with students, and fine-tune my teaching techniques. The ability to craft engaging lesson plans, manage classroom dynamics, and tailor my approach to meet the learning needs of students in a different region and context from my current workplace proved to be invaluable. The microteaching sessions compelled me to adapt swiftly to unexpected challenges and respond constructively to feedback, reinforcing the significance of flexibility and reflective practice in becoming an effective TESOL practitioner.

Organizing a workshop on Contemporary Issues in ELT was a fulfilling opportunity that elevated my confidence as a coordinator and presenter. Before the workshop, I was in charge of leading the logistics team to prepare for the event. Preparing and presenting at the workshop enhanced my skills in public speaking and conveying complex concepts to diverse audiences. I had learnt how to utilize Canva to design an eye-catching poster to deliver the research findings. Engaging with colleagues and peers in discussing emerging trends and challenges in ELT fostered a sense of community and allowed me to contribute to ongoing conversations in the field. This experience reinforced the importance of continuous professional development and knowledge dissemination within the ELT community.

The visit to Thai Binh Duong University provided insights into the broader landscape of ELT and potential collaborative initiatives. Engaging in discussions on potential partnerships between institutions underscored the significance of networking and building connections to enhance educational opportunities. Witnessing the exchange of ideas and experiences between different educational entities broadened my perspective on the role of collaboration in advancing the field of education in general and ELT in specific. Seeing how leaders of the two institutions discussing possible collaboration was particularly useful for my endeavor in the area of international cooperation.

Overall, the practicum has armed me with an arsenal of skills that extend far beyond the classroom. The amalgamation of microteaching, workshop organization, and cross-institutional visits has sculpted my adaptability, critical thinking, and communication abilities. I am now equipped with the tools to navigate diverse teaching contexts, continually refine my pedagogical strategies, and contribute substantively to the growth of ELT. As I embark on my journey as a TESOL professional, the lessons gleaned from the practicum will remain embedded in my approach, propelling me towards an impactful and fulfilling career in education.
