PROFESSIONAL SKILLS I HAVE LEARNT FROM THE PRACTICUM

Embarking on a practicum trip to Nha Trang, a picturesque coastal city, marked a significant phase in my TESOL master’s journey. Having completed all courses and prior to commencing my thesis, this experience presented an opportunity to apply my acquired knowledge and skills in a practical setting. The trip encompassed diverse activities, including conducting a micro teaching session, organizing a workshop, and engaging in cross-cultural interactions. In this reflection paper, I delve into the professional skills I cultivated during this practicum, focusing on analytical and assessment abilities, planning proficiency, communication acumen, cultural competence, and leadership skills. Furthermore, I evaluate the transformation in my behavior and perceptions, considering my contribution to the practicum's success.

One of the standout takeaways from this practicum was the sharpening of my analytical and assessment skills. Evaluating my peers' microteaching presentations honed my ability to critically analyze teaching techniques, identify strengths, and offer constructive feedback. This experience enhanced my capacity to gauge effective pedagogical methods and adapt them to diverse learning environments.

The practicum required meticulous planning in numerous facets. From coordinating the field trip and scheduling micro teaching lessons to organizing workshops and the gala dinner, I gained a profound appreciation for the intricacies of event planning. These experiences emphasized the significance of foresight, adaptability, and attention to detail in executing successful academic and social events.

Effective communication emerged as a cornerstone during the practicum. Collaborating with fellow students, university staff, and workshop participants necessitated clear and concise communication. I learned to tailor my communication style to diverse audiences, fostering understanding and meaningful interactions. Through these experiences, I refined my ability to articulate ideas and instructions comprehensively. Socially, communication facilitated meaningful connections between me and my classmates. Collaborating on various activities, sharing experiences, and engaging in discussions allowed us to bridge the gap between academic acquaintances and genuine friendships. Moreover, communication enabled me to build friendships with some locals, students and teachers at Nha Trang university, some of whom have remained in contact with me since the practicum. Effective communication not only rendered the practicum a trip with academic benefits, but also transformed it into a pleasurable experience.

Immersion in the local teaching context unveiled the importance of cultural competency. Teaching English to non-English majors at Nha Trang University revealed the need for adaptable teaching strategies that consider students' cultural backgrounds and language proficiency levels. This heightened my sensitivity to intercultural nuances, enabling me to create inclusive and effective learning environments.

The practicum underscored the multifaceted nature of leadership. Adaptability emerged as a key trait, as I navigated unfamiliar situations and collaborated with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Engaging with Thai Binh Duong University highlighted the social responsibility tied to leadership, emphasizing the role of education in fostering connections and broader societal development.

Reflecting on my contributions during the practicum, I witnessed a transformation in my behavior and perception. My role as a microteaching instructor enabled me to share my knowledge and insights, thereby facilitating my peers’ growth. Witnessing their progress underscored the importance of constructive feedback and peer support, leading to a more collaborative teaching mindset. Additionally, participating in workshop organization deepened my appreciation for the effort behind seamless execution. I realized the significance of delegation, effective time management, and adaptability in creating impactful learning experiences. This newfound awareness shifted my approach to teamwork, fostering a more inclusive and adaptable leadership style. Last but not least, the experience of exploring Nha Trang's rich cultural tapestry alongside friends facilitated personal connections that transcended the academic sphere. These interactions reaffirmed my belief in the power of fostering relationships beyond the confines of formal education, emphasizing the role of interpersonal connections in holistic growth.

In conclusion, the TESOL practicum trip to Nha Trang was a transformative journey that enriched my professional skills and reshaped my perceptions. The exposure to diverse teaching contexts, coupled with the intricacies of event planning, has indelibly shaped my approach to education and collaboration. As I embark on the thesis phase, I carry forward these lessons, committed to fostering inclusive, culturally sensitive, and impactful educational experiences.
